Guys I’m in a live, HD music video. Band called Regime I did festival sessions and gigs for last Summer got an album track sync’d up by the leg-ends at Dark Fable Media. Check it and chuck us some feedback? Regime - Only For Fools & Horses Vimeo Video
Completely alone, flat broke in a friend’s house in South London all night having been working on promo all afternoon.
Listening to James Blake -
a) amazed that a close friend of mine is a close friend of his b) consistently reminded how it is people like him, my own age who will change tomorrow’s music more than the ‘acclaimed’ names of the last 200years
Also not ashamed to say how right now his rendition of ‘A Case Of You’ repeatedly nearly brings me to tears. Joni wrote some of the best lyrics known to man when she put that to paper.
MONSTER piano player @HuwWarren gave me an accurate prediction when I said to him years ago that I didn’t ‘feel bothered to write any music of my own’.
He reckoned that someday that would change and I’d get into writing.
Tomorrow I’m meeting with Joe Hinchliffe who’ll be guitaring on some stuff I’ve been writing and we’re trying out a young drummer who’s apparently the guy to watch ‘round here.
Haven’t been so excited to hear something this much in a real long time.
Huw Warren - where musician meets Mystic Meg.
***Couple of pictures and rehearsal recordings dropping tomorrow morning in the FB and Soundcloud respectively***
I’m always thinking about that - the shape of a show. It’s not just:
- “Oh man you know this tune? [Plays All The Things You Are]”
Yeah of course we all know that tune but what difference does it make? Y’know, it doesn’t make any sense. Did you write that tune? No. Y’know, how many millions of people have played ‘All The Things You Are’?… Most of which sucked. Y’know what I mean? FOR REAL! I don’t wanna listen to that crap again. It’s gotta be an exceptionally… It’s got to be a special moment to put people together. For me anyway- (again this is just my opinion) it’s got to be a special moment to put people together to play THAT kind of music. The concept is just like:
- “Oh let’s play uh ‘All the things you are’ in SEVEN!”
Y’know like…..GREAT … With what concept? …. What rhythmic concept do you have other than ‘Dun dun dundun dun dun’ Man c’mon it’s so weak. Conceptually that’s weak I feel….
- “Why?!” [says drummer Tom Breckline]
Exactly! Why?! It’s the eternal question - Why would you do that?! Number one you have the talent to play in seven, you know the tune so you know a bunch of ii,V,I’s and harmony, you can play the melody. Why not put all of those things into something just minisculely original of your own? Y’know what I mean? Reharmonise the song, rearrange it, play it as a ballad. Have some sort of concept y’know. That’s always at the back of my mind uh… Actually y’know what, fuck it it’s at the forefront of my mind when I’m thinking about this stuff, it really is and uhm…. It helps. Trust me… Not only do I really enjoy what I do but I make a really good living doing it aswell and I’m very happy like really happy doing it. I’m happy to wake up in the morning and be like ‘Ah great. what’s today?! What’s gonna happen?’
They never heard of fucking Tony Williams. They don’t even know who fucking Tony Williams is y’know but…… Hah….. Y’know - Who Tony Williams is y’know and they go like ‘wow’ y’know. “It’s Inhumane to play like Jungle because it’s so fucking fast” but it’s fucking really ridiculous y’know I mean every jazz drummer can do that. Could do that, COULD do that y’know; if you would understand the language. That’s it y’know that’s like “Ah yeah but that’s just like playing busy shit!” That’s why all these fucking drummers go like “Oh yeah this is like [sings Ahmen break] - it’s just a James Brown groove sped up.” Which is half of the truth. It’s not completely wrong but it’s half the truth. It’s like y’know, you wanna speak slang? Y’know of course you can fuckin’ fumble ‘round with your hand like ‘Yo man!’ y’know….. ‘WORD!’ ‘n shit but it’s fucking… It’s not real….. Yeah man that’s some deep shit [laughter]…… Probably not y’know but ah I dunno….. It’s an idea y’know.
Hamish MacBrain (NME Journalist) - You’ve always been quite vocal about how music shouldn’t be given away for free. But is this time for a change?
Noel Gallagher - No, no. No free downloads. I value my music. I don’t sit in a studio, and fucking make it up as I go along, and go “This one’s free, then” I think if you buy it, you as a listener value it more.
Still not sure where I stand on the downloads/releases debate.
